20% higher soy yields for Samarth Kisan
Within the Soy Producer Support Initiative (SOYPSI), Solidaridad works on the improvement of living conditions of farmers and labourers in India. It provides a premium and technical support, leading to increased income and reduction of environmental problems.
Target
Within 3 years more than 6000 soy family farmers should increase production with at least 12% while using less inputs. The aim is also to organize farmers in farmers’ groups, including 15% women, and to link farmers to international market players.
Reason
Production per ha of soy in India is very low compared to international standards. Improving soy production can result in both income increase and reduction of environmental problems. In this situation poverty reduction and environment go hand in hand.
Activities
- Support and training on environmental and social issues to farmers and farmers' groups.
- Building farmers' institutions.
Results
- In the first year more than 3000 farmers have been trained.
- The estimated yield increase amounts as much as 20 – 30%, with less input used.
