Executive Director

Solidaridad's International Supervisory Board is looking for an Executive Director who can provide vision and leadership to a rapidly growing global organization for international cooperation.

S/He has the  experience base to understand and navigate a network-based organization with nine regional centres on five continents and has the ability to personally, inspirationally and authentically connect to the mission of Solidaridad, its staff and its partners and lead the organization to the next level.

The successful candidate is the first focal point of Solidaridad Network and reports to the International Supervisory Board. S/He chairs the Executive Board of Directors and offers direct leadership to nine Regional Directors and a team of professionals at the Network Secretariat in Utrecht, The Netherlands, as well as to leaders of network teams. The Executive Director is the first responsible person for the state of the Network.


  • Protect the mission, values and integrity of the organization and ensure that Solidaridad is seen as a reference point in the sector

  • Be the first spokesperson of the organization, creating visibility and recognition

  • Position the organization as an effective leader in sustainability and inclusive economies

  • Offer direction and guidance to the strategy of the Solidaridad Network through a (multi-)annual planning, learning and reporting process with special attention to institutional growth, personal development of staff and improving the results and impact of programmes

  • Provide leadership to the Network Secretariat, which focuses on the network innovation areas, policy & programmes and quality systems & services

  • Provide guidance and support to the Managing Directors, evaluate their performance and take lead in recruitment procedures of new MDs

  • Create the conditions for quality of supervision at ISB and CSB levels

  • Guard the financial integrity of the organization and ensure transparency and accountability for the use of public and private funds only for public goods

  • Ensure standards and mechanisms for ethical and respectful behaviour of staff at all levels and in all circumstances

  • Grow and maintain effective relationships with key donors, governments and private and sector partners at a global level

  • Identify and materialize opportunities, find solutions for challenges and balance both in terms of mitigating risks


  • Exceptional proven leadership qualities and demonstrated ability to lead a global organisation with a commitment to results and impact, and an ability to work cross-culturally and gender inclusive

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field of science (international development, economics, business, agriculture or social sciences)

  • Proven experience in building enabling environments for sustainable and inclusive growth

  • Permanently looking for innovative solutions and partnerships with science and technology

  • Proven understanding of realities in our field programmes and among our local partners

  • Excellent understanding of the world of business and policy development

  • Sound judgement and ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex and changing environment

  • Excellent oral and writing skills in English. Possession of additional language skills is a relevant extra

  • Proven ability to relate to and obtain funding from public and private donors

  • Willing and able to travel frequently


  • Position as the statutory director of the Solidaridad Network Foundation

  • A permanent full-time position, based at the Network Secretariat in Utrecht, the Netherlands

  • Nomination is for a period of four years with an opportunity for a new term of four years maximum

  • An informal and professional work environment, with high standards of quality, output and delivery

This is a demanding role where you have to work at the highest level, often under pressure and with tight deadlines. The salary will commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the applicant and the responsibilities of the function. Salaries are capped under Dutch NGO regulation.
