We are looking for a specialist to support our strategy for sustainable landscapes and climate innovation which combines adaptation and mitigation (including climate smart agriculture) with integrated landscape management interventions in Central America, Mexico and Caribbean. The specialist will work closely with our regional supply chain-focused programme managers and ICT, impact investment, monitoring and evaluation and communications specialists to deliver ground-breaking solutions that can accelerate and scale the transition to a sustainable and inclusive economy.
As our landscapes and climate specialist you will work from one of our regional offices in close collaboration with the regional team, and report to the regional director. Deadline for applications is June 15, 2018.
Solidaridad Central America, Mexico and Caribbean is part of Solidaridad Network, an international civil society organization present in 39 countries, focusing on sustainable supply chains. We have experienced significant growth in recent years and has a robust regional portfolio that works across entire supply chains, from smallholder producers to large agro-industry players and brands. We engage with the following supply chains: palm oil, sugarcane, livestock, cocoa, coffee, aquaculture, fruits & vegetables, and gold. We have recently expanded our focus beyond supply chains to sustainable landscape management. Through the convening and capacity building of multi-stakeholder platforms we facilitate dialogue, transparency, consensus building and co-financing to achieve long-term sustainable solutions to pressing issues. These include climate change, water and soil conservation, land use pressure, food security, poverty, social inclusion, workers’ rights, and others. Our team of professionals manage projects in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Haiti and Dominican Republic, with possible expansion to other countries in Central America and the Caribbean.
Solidaridad aims to leverage supply chain actors to move beyond farm and factory sustainability to landscape level interventions. We facilitate multi-stakeholder dialogue and consensus-building, to introduce climate innovations for mitigation and adaptation that lead to landscape resilience, increased food security, and a regenerative economy. The landscapes and climate specialist will focus on the following:
Support the development of a regional strategy in coordination with Solidaridad staff and key partners to scale our current landscape programmes in Honduras and Nicaragua to a wider “Mesoamerican Landscape Lab”
Development of landscape and climate programmes and proposals across Mesoamerica, in collaboration with our regional programme managers, impact investment, ICT and monitoring and evaluation specialists, partner organizations, and potential donors or investors
Creation of relationship management systems and networking with key strategic landscape partners, including private sector, government, CSO, research institutes, and donors or impact investors
Support the mapping of potential partners and funding sources at international level
Development and implementation of training and learning programmes for Solidaridad staff and partners in order to improve skill sets and understanding of new landscape and climate models and tools
Participate in the regional management team, as well as in Solidaridad’s global landscapes and climate task forces
Represent Solidaridad at regional and international events
Facilitate knowledge flows on cutting edge landscape and climate approaches and tools;
Publish online (e.g. LinkedIn, website or on climate or landscape fora) or in journals about Solidaridads climate and/or landscape approach
The ideal candidate will fulfill the following requirements
Minimum Master’s degree in a relevant discipline
Professional spoken and written fluency in both English and Spanish required
Up to date knowledge on landscape innovation and sustainability concepts, the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement and their practical application in the field at local and national level. Knowledge of and/or experience with the Green Climate fund, the World Bank Group, and other climate funds
Minimum five years of deep and verifiable work experience in climate and landscapes in international development settings
5 years professional and living experience in Latin America: experience in Central America or Mexico a significant plus
Demonstrated track record in proposal writing, fundraising, technical reporting
Strong facilitation skills and ability at public speaking
Experience in managing, designing, budgeting, monitoring and evaluating sustainable development projects, particularly related to climate change and sustainable landscapes
Knowledge and expertise on social inclusion and gender issues
Strong analytical and research skills with a vision on sustainable agriculture, landscapes, and climate innovation
Experience with the use of tools to monitor landscape and climate change interventions.
Working knowledge of climate innovations, such as carbon markets, REDD+
Experience in developing partnerships with business, NGO, public and private foundations, donors and government actors and investors; multi-stakeholder platform/dialogue experience a plus
GIS and landscape modeling capacity desirable
Experience working in multicultural settings
Service-oriented, pragmatic, flexible
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking
Must be able to travel regularly in region, with occasional travel to other regions
Must be able to work in Guatemala or other country in the region
