Better Cotton Initiative

With the first pilot project launched in 2010, Solidaridad has helped to pave the way for the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) in China. After overseeing the first verified cotton in 2012, Solidaridad launched the first project for smallholders in China’s Hebei province in 2013.

This led to the first smallholder cotton farmers in China receiving BCI verification in 2014. With the on-going success of the cotton programme, Solidaridad launched a project sponsored by the Walmart Foundation to promote gender empowerment among cotton farmers in 2014. Solidaridad is now looking beyond certification towards making a significant investment of effort in innovation and technology, aiming to significantly improve water efficiency, gender empowerment and community development in cotton production.
