Solidaridad calls for new cotton paradigm in Ecotextile News

The recent release of the final report from the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) has spurred discussion on the relevance of global cotton standards and certification schemes. In the latest issue of Ecotextile News, Global Programme Manager for Cotton and Textiles, Janet Mensink, described how Solidaridad goes beyond certification by emphasising a holistic and collaborative approach to cotton sustainability.

“In this vision, cotton is not the central factor in a farming system, and its importance must be balanced against other pressures and needs: food, fibre, income, ecosystem and social services, the availability and opportunities of other fibres, including waste products and under or unexploited alternatives,” Mensink said in Ecotextile News.
