Video: Solidaridad works on improving the lives of gold miners in Peru

07 March 2017

Together with gold mining companies, Solidaridad seeks to encourage responsible gold production. One such partner is Minera Yanaquihua. Thanks to Solidaridad, this mining company was able to become certified according to the standards of the Responsible Jewellery Council.

Find out in the video below how miners benefited from sustainability improvements.

Small-scale gold miners often operate near gold mines without official approval from the landowner and the government. They live a tough life because they have no safety equipment and the danger of collapsing mineshafts and mercury poisoning is constantly lurking. Along with Minera Yanaquihua, Solidaridad is working on formalizing these miners. This allows them to work legally and safely in an environmentally conscious way, as well as earn a better income.
