Technical Assistance as a key strategy to support small-scale farmers globally

This publication draws on four case studies across Ghana, Colombia, India, Mozambique, Kenya and Ethiopia to explore how Solidaridad designs and delivers tailored technical assistance to small-scale producers working in cocoa, palm oil, soy, and fruits and vegetables.

From farmer field schools and video-viewing clubs to digital weather advisory platforms and community-led enterprise groups, our teams deploy a diverse range of approaches to bridge the gap between agricultural knowledge and on-the-ground practice. Each approach was chosen and adapted based on local context, available resources and the specific needs of the farmers involved.

The results are concrete: cocoa yields up by over 25% in Ghana, soy productivity more than doubling in Mozambique, food insecurity reduced for over 10,000 households in Kenya. But this publication also honestly examines where technical assistance falls short and what it takes to build programmes that outlast their funding.
