Increasing food security

Evaluation studies revealed the inadequacy of food in coffee producing households. To address this, Solidaridad and Nestle initiated a food security programme (FOSEK) targeting 70,000 and 50,000 farmers in Kenya and Ethiopia respectively.

Solidaridad’s coffee programme jointly implemented with Fairtrade in Kenya has successfully allowed women to own, manage and earn income from coffee farms previously wholly controlled by men. The women are currently directly members of cooperative societies, can deliver coffee beans and manage finances using own bank accounts.
