Strengthening Low-Carbon Coffee Production with Strategic Partners

The global Pathways to Prosperity programme works to expand sustainable and climate-smart production in Latin America, focusing on the coffee sector in key countries such as Honduras. The programme works with farmers and partner organizations in the transition toward more resilient, low-carbon coffee systems.

The Pathways to Prosperity programme (P2P) is a six-year global initiative (2023–2029), implemented with the support of the Government of the Netherlands and local partners. Its objective is to scale sustainable and inclusive production through proven solutions, addressing systemic issues and structural weaknesses in the sector so that farmers, service providers and workers can thrive within supply chains.

In Latin America, P2P focuses on scaling climate-smart production that contributes to global efforts to reduce emissions and help farmers adapt to climate change while also generating economic benefits. Honduras, together with Colombia, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru, is a priority country for implementation in the coffee sector, particularly in light of the European Union’s new deforestation regulation.

Promoting a Resilient, Low-Carbon Coffee Sector in Honduras

In Honduras, P2P supports farmers and partner organizations in transitioning to more sustainable, competitive and climate-resilient coffee systems. Through joint efforts, the programme achieved significant results in the field during 2025:

  • More than 15,000 hectares managed using sustainable, carbon-reduction practices
  • 12 model farms established and equipped to replicate good practices among farmers
  • 7 field days conducted, covering plant nutrition, pest and disease management, biochar and agroforestry systems
  • Distribution of fruit and timber tree species to strengthen biodiversity and agroforestry systems
  • 50 soil analyses and 100 EUDR pre-assessments, carried out in coordination with COCAFCAL/CAPUCAS
  • 3 gender and social inclusion workshops, promoting equitable participation of women and men
  • 2 training workshops on bio-inputs and organic fertilizers, implemented with INFOP to strengthen technical capacities

Carbon Academy: Training Sustainability Leaders in the Coffee Sector

The Carbon Academy is one of the pillars of the P2P programme, designed to strengthen the technical capacities of professionals who work with farmers transitioning to low-carbon coffee systems. This training space combines theory and practice. It provides tools to measure farm-level carbon footprints, design environmentally responsible management plans, optimize the use of fertilizers and bio-inputs, and implement efficient agroforestry systems.

During this cycle, 52 technicians actively participated in the Academy. They gained the skills to integrate gender and social inclusion criteria, implementing composting and coffee pulp management strategies and using digital management tools. This comprehensive approach not only strengthens farm sustainability but also supports professionalization across the sector, ensuring that decarbonization progress is maintained over the long term and replicated in different regions of the country.

Strategic Partnerships and a Shared Commitment

The success of P2P in Honduras is the result of coordinated work among partners, technical teams and farmers. The programme has strengthened key strategic alliances through the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with Café Ventura, CAFICO–Zamorano, PROEXO, COCAFCAL/CAPUCAS, BECAMO and Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC).

These agreements have enabled stronger coordination with cooperatives and local companies, strengthening the adoption of decarbonization practices. Their leadership and engagement are essential for a sustainable, climate-smart coffee sector focused on quality excellence, contributing to local economic development and environmental stewardship.
